Artistic Statement

In 2005 I gained a foundation degree in Fine Art at Tyne Metropolitan College and later a foundation degree in Ceramics at Newcastle College. Since leaving college I have been concentrating on making and selling my ceramics.
My work stems from a need to create; to make something from clay that has its roots in the earth. I take inspiration for my designs from my love of nature and the ever changing colours of the seasons on the landscape. The surface texture and colours on trees, leaves and rock pools are a constant source of inspiration.
I use stoneware clay to hand-build my ceramics using slab and coil methods. After the ceramics are fired to 1000 degrees centigrade at biscuit stage, a lava glaze is applied on the surface then finally fired in a wood kiln to 1300 degrees centigrade.

I also make hand-thrown work on the potter's wheel which is fired to 1000 degrees centigrade in my own electric kiln. It is then glazed with a stoneware glaze and fired to 1260 degrees centigrade.
